The importance of the fruit and berry sector for the future Gea Bakker, Akkerbau Sector Manager at Rabobank Netherlands, and Cor van Veldhuizen, Director of AgroFoodcluster, immediately understand the importance of a well-developed vision of the future for the fruit and berry sector. They note that in order to ensure sufficient space for this sector in the future, it is necessary to demonstrate its importance and prove that growing fruit and berry crops on the fertile lands of the Dutch delta is the best option. The government is currently working on the document "Nota Ruimte", which defines the future construction in the Netherlands. Through their partnership, they plan to demonstrate the importance of the fruit and berry sector. Prospects for cooperation The merger with Potato Valley, a fruit and berry crop network in Friesland and Groningen, allowed Agrofoodcluster, originally from Flevoland, to cover about 85% of the fruit and berry crop industry...

An Eastern Oregon potato processing plant, Lamb Weston's Hermiston facility, has recently come to an agreement with state regulators regarding repeated wastewater violations. These violations have contributed to excess groundwater pollution in an already contaminated region, exacerbating concerns over environmental and public health. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued Lamb Weston's Hermiston facility a "pre-enforcement notice" nearly two years ago, highlighting 75 violations of its permit. These violations resulted in approximately 189 tons of excess nitrates being added to nearby farmland between 2016 and 2020. In a subsequent investigation, the agency found that the facility had violated its wastewater permit 90 times from 2015 through 2021, leading to the dumping of more than 220 tons of excess nitrates into nearby farmland. Following negotiations, DEQ reached a settlement with Lamb Weston on February 14th. As part of the agreement, Lamb Weston will undertake measures to evaluate and reduce the amount of wastewater applied to nearby farmland. This includes conducting soil sampling and additional well monitoring. Additionally, the company will pay a fine of $143,400, with the option to direct 80% of the penalty towards a "Supplemental Environmental Project" benefiting the local community and environment. Lamb Weston's Hermiston facility, a...

“The Humigator captures huge numbers of both yeast spores and bacteria. (I)n an atmosphere with high concentrations of microbes, the Humigator collects nearly as many microbes per unit of water as the water can hold." - Pete Sheridan Ph.D., Idaho State University, Department of Microbiology (See study results here.) https://youtu.be/QlQwzvchJrM?si=YvTlsNnWCY07Z0VU Maximizing Humidity, Minimizing Disease Humigation both disinfects and humidifies storage air.  It stops the spread of Silver Scurf, Black Dot and other airborne disease and humidifies up to 100% relative humidity (RH) while minimizing water usage and standing water.  With a 60% increase in airflow and air scrubbing efficiency in our latest models, Humigators clean and humidify storage air more completely and faster than ever.  Humigation has significantly reduced or eliminated yield loss from Silver Scurf and has maintained relative humidity at higher than 95% for many growers.  IHT was selected as the SBA Region 10 (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska) exporter of the year for 2022. We're very fortunate to have great partners in Europe as well as North America. Growers across the world are using Humigation to achieve great storage results! Egypt’s decision to allow its currency to freely fluctuate on March 6, 2024, has sent shockwaves through global markets, particularly impacting the potato trade. With the Egyptian pound losing over 61% of its value against the US dollar in just one day, the country’s potato exports, already significant on the world stage, have become even more appealing to European Union (EU) countries facing shortages and skyrocketing prices. Egypt, ranking among the top five global potato exporters, traditionally supplies potatoes to a wide array of nations, including Russia, the EU, the UAE, Lebanon, Iraq, Kuwait, and Syria. Despite geopolitical challenges, such as the ongoing Red Sea crisis fueled by Houthi activities, Egyptian potatoes remain sought after, with even distant markets like Indonesia showing interest. The timing of Egypt's currency devaluation couldn't be more opportune for the EU, where potato prices have been soaring. As Europe grapples with a shortage in supply, exacerbated by various factors including adverse weather conditions and logistical challenges, Egyptian potatoes offer a lifeline. The sudden devaluation has allowed for some relief in the tense potato market, preventing further price hikes in the short term. This convergence of events highlights the interconnectedness of global markets and the resilience...

ലോക ജലദിനം: സുസ്ഥിര കൃഷിയിൽ ഉരുളക്കിഴങ്ങിൻ്റെ പങ്ക്

Today, March 22nd, marks World Water Day, a global initiative aimed at highlighting the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of water resources. As we reflect on the significance of water for life on our planet, it's crucial to recognize its pivotal role in agriculture, particularly in the cultivation of staple crops like potatoes. Water is not only essential for sustaining human life but also serves as a cornerstone of agricultural practices worldwide. Among various crops, the potato emerges as a standout for its relatively lower water footprint. While crops like rice and pasta require substantial amounts of water for cultivation, potatoes demonstrate a more efficient use of this precious resource. For instance, to produce just one kilogram of potatoes, approximately 500 liters of water are needed. In contrast, the production of the same amount of rice demands a staggering 2500 liters of water. This stark contrast underscores the potato's efficiency in water usage, making it a more sustainable option for agricultural production, especially in regions facing water scarcity or limited irrigation resources. The potato's lower water footprint can be attributed to several factors inherent in its cultivation process. Unlike rice, which often requires flooded fields for...
